Thin Lizzy are an Irish hard rock band formed in Dublin in 1969. The band was originally led by singer, bass player and songwriter Phil Lynott. One of the great successes of the group is the subject of "The Boys Are Back in Town", a classic in the history of rock. 
Critic John Dugan writes that while the band gathered force, Lynott was even more insightful and intelligent when writing the songs, preferring themes based on social class dramas of love and hate influenced by Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen and Irish literature. In an interview with Phil Lynott, he said his greatest influence was Van Morrison. The band's music covered much territory, including country and folk, but is generally seen as a band of heavy metal or hard rock. 
Though others had earlier used similar techniques, Thin Lizzy was characterized as one of the first hard rock bands in melodic guitars use two at once, a technique pioneered by Wishbone Ash in the United Kingdom and that in turn was also used by Lynyrd Skynyrd in the United States. This technique was later refined and popularized by pop bands of the new wave of heavy metal in the United Kingdom, like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden especially. The latter in particular have praised Thin Lizzy lot over his career, even played a version of his song "Massacre." Examples of this duel guitars in perfect harmony can be heard in the song "The Boys Are Back In Town" and "Cowboy Song" from the album "Jailbreak"
